A jump in the water bill and a meter turning with every tap off pointed to the supply pipe. An acoustic reading of 599 against the outside wall put the leak within a metre, and a small hand-dug hole found the burst pipe spraying under pressure, repaired the same day.
Leaks found · Winchmore HillThe acoustic microphone gave its highest reading of 505 on the tiled floor of a ground-floor room. One excavation at that spot exposed a corroded pipe weeping into the sub-floor, which was cut out and replaced.

Rather than trench across the floor, the leak was pinpointed first and the slab opened only where the pipe and stopcock sit. The failed section was replaced and the floor made good around a single opening.

Tracer gas sampled along the skirting board peaked in one place. Lifting the floor there revealed a copper pipe corroded through where it sat in damp material, and it was replaced with new pipe and joints.

A damp patch kept returning on a plastered wall. Tracer gas checked along the pipe run from a window sill peaked at one point, and opening a small chase there exposed a leaking joint with the staining it had caused.

The acoustic microphone gave readings of 348 and 367 along the outside of the house, peaking over the line of the blue supply pipe. One excavation exposed a leaking joint on the main, which was remade and tested.

After a pressure test confirmed the leak was on the pressurised pipework, the run was traced through the wall and the leak marked. The chase opened was no bigger than needed to expose the pipe and make the repair.

The thermal camera picked out a hot water pipe running vertically inside a hallway wall, with the heat spreading from a point along it. That image fixed the position of the leak before any plaster was touched.

With the suspect loop running warm and the others isolated at the manifold, the thermal camera showed every pipe through the finished floor. The heat spreading away from one line marked the leak for a single opening.

The boiler was losing pressure with no visible leak. Scanning the kitchen floor with the heating on showed a bright hot spot in front of the cooker where the heating pipe was leaking into the screed.

A warm patch underfoot was the only symptom. The thermal camera showed the hot pipe route under the kitchen floor and the bloom of heat where it was leaking, so the floor was opened in that one place.

Walking the ground microphone along the outside of the house, the reading climbed to 599 at one point against the brickwork. That peak put the burst supply pipe within a metre and the excavation found it first time.

The ground microphone was moved across the tiles along the route of the supply pipe, and the reading peaked at 505 over one spot. The corroded pipe was found directly beneath it.

With one board lifted, the tracer gas detector was placed over the exposed pipe run between the joists. The reading of 50 confirmed the leak on that section without lifting the rest of the floor.

On an underground supply run, the detector was checked at each chamber along the route. A reading of 580 at one inspection chamber on the block paving showed the gas surfacing there, and the leaking section was exposed beside it.

A stain on the ceiling below a bathroom could have come from the bath waste, the overflow or the supply. Filling the bath with coloured dye and watching where the colour appeared below identified the escape route before anything was opened.

A gauge connected at a radiator confirmed the heating circuit was losing pressure on its own, ruling the boiler out. The thermal camera and acoustic microphone then took over to find where on the circuit the water was going.

Through a small existing gap the borescope camera showed the void under the floor, the pipe run and where it was wet. That view confirmed the thermal findings and kept the opening to one board.
