Water Bill Suddenly Doubled? Find the Leak

If your metered bill has jumped and nothing about your household has changed, water is almost certainly escaping between the meter and your taps. The leak is usually silent, hidden and repairable once it has been located.

What it means

Water bill jumped: what is usually going on

A water meter records every litre that passes it, whether that water reaches a tap or soaks into the ground under your drive. A bill that has doubled or tripled with no new bathroom, no paddling pool and no extra people in the house is the meter telling you the truth: water is leaving the pipework somewhere it should not. Because the escape is usually underground or under a floor, there is often nothing to see, and the bill is the first and only warning.

Around Watford and across London the most common cause is the supply pipe between the boundary stop tap and the house. In 1930s semis it is often an old lead or galvanised pipe under the front garden; in Victorian terraces it can be a copper pipe under a suspended timber floor; in newer houses a blue MDPE pipe with a failed joint. Inside the house, a toilet overflow running quietly into the pan, a leaking underground pipe feeding an outside tap, or a corroded copper joint under a solid floor will each waste thousands of litres a month without a drip you can see.

We start at the meter. With every tap and appliance off, the meter tells us how much water is escaping and whether it is on the mains or the heating. From there we use an acoustic ground microphone to listen for the leak through floors, concrete and paving, and hydrogen tracer gas where the pipe is buried or plastic and silent. Once the leak is pinpointed we mark it, photograph it and, if you want us to, open the smallest possible hole and repair it the same visit. You get a written report with the readings and photographs.

Most water companies will consider a leak allowance on the bill once a leak on your side has been found and repaired, so keep the report and the repair invoice. If the leak has damaged the house, your buildings insurance may cover the cost of finding it under trace and access cover; check your policy wording or ask us and we will tell you what insurers usually expect to see.

Call today if

  • The meter is spinning fast rather than creeping, which means a burst rather than a weep: turn off the stop tap and call today.
  • Water is appearing at the surface of the drive, garden or floor.
  • You can hear running water inside a wall or under the floor with everything off.
  • The boiler has cut out on low pressure and will not hold a top-up.

How it works

From your first call to a leak you can see in the report

Tell us what you are seeing

Call or WhatsApp with a few photos and a line about the symptoms. We ask a handful of questions, agree a fixed price and book the survey, usually for the same or the next day.

Work out which system is leaking

On arrival we pressure test the mains, hot water and heating, check the meter and test the escaping water, so we know what we are looking for before the detection starts.

Pinpoint the leak without opening up

Thermal imaging, the acoustic ground microphone and tracer gas are used as the pipework dictates until the leak is marked on the floor or wall.

Report, and repair if you want it

You get a written report with readings, thermal images and photographs, ready for a trace and access claim. If you want the leak fixed, we open that one spot and repair it.

Straight answers

Water bill jumped: questions answered

How do I know if my high water bill is caused by a leak?

Turn everything off and watch the meter. If it moves with no water being used, water is escaping somewhere. A bill that jumps and stays high, with no change in how you use water, is almost always a leak rather than a misread.

Will the water company fix a leak on my property?

Usually not. The water company is responsible for the pipe up to the boundary stop tap; the supply pipe from there to your house, and everything inside, is yours. Some companies offer a one-off repair or allowance scheme, so it is worth asking once the leak has been found.

Can I get a refund on the bill?

Most water companies will consider a leak allowance for water lost through a leak on your supply pipe once it has been repaired, usually once per property. Keep our report and the repair invoice, as they normally ask for proof.

How do you find a leak on an underground supply pipe?

We confirm the loss at the meter, then listen for it with an acoustic ground microphone along the pipe route, and where the pipe is plastic or deep we put hydrogen tracer gas into it and detect where the gas surfaces. That gives us a spot to dig rather than a trench.

How quickly can you come out for a high water bill?

Same-day and next-day surveys are usually available across Watford, Hertfordshire and London. Send a photo of the meter and the bill on WhatsApp and we will give you a fixed price agreed before we start.
